USEF LIFE RECORDING
In order to highlight North American breeding quality and to establish relevance of the Continental Studbook within the North American show system, performance data monitoring and collection are designed into the Studbook systems from foal registration to mare and stallion evaluations.
Breeding, marketing and brand name recognition is not only important at WBFSH-ranked international levels. Collection and marketing of performance data from amateur to professional levels is important to develop the entire range of the domestic breeding industry.
To that end, every foal registration with the Continental Studbook includes USEF life recording and printing of the recording number on its Official Certificate of Registration.

The Continental Studbook offers very attractive stallion options for the breeder, but it will be built upon the excellent mares in North America that are descended from both domestic and imported families. An important data service provided by the Studbook is recording of mare families on all registrations. Existing numbering systems of foreign and TB families will be supplemented with Continental Studbook-assigned numbers for previously unidentified families. By eventually linking performance and Production Indicator data to families, breeders may begin to evaluate proficiency of domestic and foreign families in North American breeding.
An example of show jumping mare families is provided below until more resources and educational material on this important topic are developed.
· Holsteiner stamm 162: Carthago, Coster, Nonstop
· Dutch family 002: Darco, Arko III, Now or Never
· Selle Francais family 7: Quidam de Revel, Sheyenne de Baugy
· Thorougbred 10: Laudanum

The Continental Studbook offers a voluntary 5-catagory process by which the Studbook and the breeder can gauge the quality of mares and stallions. It is a sensible way for breeders to assess their programs and also to help market their horses. The 5P PRODUCTION INDICATOR SYSTEM was designed to highlight quality heritage, to reinforce the value of generational breeding and to emphasize the equality of both mares and stallions in high quality breeding practices.
