In the Continental Studbook, stallions are defined in two simple ways: CS-LICENSED stallions and EXTRINSIC-CS-LICENSED stallions. Both licensing designations have identical breeding privileges, and breeders do not have to worry about tiered registry classifications, breeding surcharges or special permits or permission when using a stallion of either designation.
CS-LICENSED – The CS-LICENSED designation simply applies to a stallion that has been directly licensed by the Continental Studbook after completing requirements set out in the breeding rules. Given the recent public launch of the Studbook, there are currently no CS-LICENSED stallions. It is a Studbook priority to enable breeding and development of domestic stallion sources, and domestic CS-LICENSED stallions will emerge as the studbook grows. Stallions will be licensed first from those already registered with WBFSH-member organizations, and stallions will later be licensed from colts born into the Continental Studbook.
EXTRINSIC-CS-LICENSED - Any stallion meeting the Continental Studbook’s internal licensing requirements and fully approved/licensed with a WBFSH-member registry is designated as an EXTRINSIC-CS-LICENSED stallion for breeding. This common horse sense approach for North America enables breeders to decide upon the best possible matings for their mares without registry tier classification, additional bureaucracy, fees or inspections. Breeders may choose from over 1000 eligible stallions from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, North America, Sweden and more.

NO RISKY AND EXPENSIVE TRAVEL TO INSPECTION SITES; NO STUDBOOK LIMITATIONS BY GEOGRAPHY
Any Thoroughbred mare or WBFSH-member registered mare meeting eligibility criteria is welcome to apply for breeding approval.
Like foal inspections, a mare approval tour is very expensive and difficult to execute well in North America. This model of breeding stock approval works very well in regional geographies of Europe, but the Continental Studbook chose to develop a better process appropriate for North America.
The Continental Studbook has developed a more sensible and convenient process for health and quality verification of breeding stock by leveraging your own vet, the ease and detail of digital photographs, modern information technology and the North American show system. Simply submit the application, and then the Studbook returns a veterinary health verification form and DNA form for completion at your convenience. Furthermore, the DNA recording and the veterinary form are waived for most mares already DNA recorded and judged at a WBFSH-member registry inspection. See the Mare Approval and Foal Registration Form for details and instructions.

COMMON HORSE SENSE FOAL REGISTRATION
It is the opinion of the Continental Studbook that foal evaluations and approvals, while having an educational and social value for the owners, are difficult, risky and expensive to conduct on a continent as large as North America. Furthermore, given great distances between inspection sites, travel can be very dangerous and traumatic for the mother and baby.
Foal approvals have little value in assessing the future quality of the horse as an adult - either as a broodmare, stallion or performance horse. Instead of foal scoring, the Continental Studbook approves or licenses horses as adult breeding stock. Only one Foal Book exists, and registrations are not tiered or classified based on the original breed of the parents. The reduced burden has obvious advantages for breeders, especially in the case of geldings or mares that are dedicated to a competition career.
The Studbook operates a simple one fee registration for any foal born from a CS-APPROVED dam and an EXTRINSIC-CS-LICENSED stallion. There are no extra forms and fees for stallion choice, annual mare recording or annual membership. In further advancement of service, the Studbook has a created a single application for simultaneous foal registration and mare approval.

The Continental Studbook breeding rules were developed for almost a year through critique, review and revision. A fundamental premise of the Studbook is to enable breeding of all European descended Warmblood stock in North America under a common unrestricted umbrella. Recognizing the importance of sport Thoroughbreds in North American and Warmblood breeding, Thoroughbreds that have proven suitable for sport are equally welcome in the Studbook.
Compatibility with WBFSH requirements was designed into the Studbook breeding rules from the start, and determining whether or not your horse is eligible for registration, approval or licensing with the Continental Studbook is easy. All WBFSH-member registered horses are eligible for the Continental Studbook under 5 simple guidelines:
CORE WBFSH-RANKED SPORT BLOODLINES
Core bloodlines are found in most WBFSH-member horses descended from Belgian, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Irish and Swedish registries which have routinely achieved top WBFSH sport rankings.
SUITABILITY FOR SPORT
Any WBFSH-member horse can be eligible by demonstrating suitability for sport. Direct from the track TBs must also demonstrate suitability for sport.
KNOWN AND TRACEABLE BLOODLINES
Registration papers documenting ancestry is required. Horses with unknown pedigrees or certificates of pedigree are not eligible.
NON-ELIGIBLE BLOODLINES
Common domestic and foreign breeds, except Thoroughbreds, which are not members of the WBFSH are not eligible.
OWNERSHIP
Ownership or lease documentation is required.
